Death (End-of-Life ) Doula

At Windhorse Elder Care, we have caregivers on staff who hold Death Doula (End-of-Life Doula) certifications from accredited programs, including the University of Vermont Larner College of Medicine and the Conscious Dying Institute.
If your loved one is at the end of life and would benefit from a caring companion to accompany and support them during this sacred transition, please contact us. Our doulas provide compassionate presence, emotional support, comfort, and guidance for both the individual and their loved ones.

The end of life is one of the most poignant and meaningful times in a person’s journey, and no one should have to walk through it alone.

A death doula (also called an end-of-life doula) is a non-medical professional who supports people who are dying and their loved ones before, during, and shortly after death. Their role is similar in spirit to a birth doula—but for the end of life.

Here’s what they typically do:

 Emotional and Psychological Support

  • Provide a calm, compassionate presence for the dying person

  • Help reduce fear, anxiety, or loneliness

  • Offer guidance to family members on what to expect emotionally

End-of-Life Planning

  • Help individuals clarify their wishes (how they want to be cared for, where they want to die, rituals, etc.)

  • Assist with advance directives or legacy projects (letters, recordings, memory books)

  • Facilitate conversations between the person and their loved ones

Physical Comfort (Non-Medical)

  • Create a soothing environment (music, lighting, aromatherapy)

  • Suggest comfort measures (positioning, relaxation techniques)

  • Work alongside hospice or medical teams (but do not provide medical care)

Support for Family and Caregivers

  • Teach family members how to be present and care for their loved one

  • Offer respite and emotional support

  • Help guide vigil planning (being present in the final hours)

After-Death Care and Grief Support

  • Assist with immediate after-death rituals or body care (depending on local laws and customs)

  • Help families process the experience and begin grieving

  • Provide referrals to grief counselors or resources

In simple terms:

A death doula helps ensure that a person’s final phase of life is as peaceful, meaningful, and aligned with their wishes as possible, while also supporting the people around them.
